Negotiation Update

Dear Colleagues,
As you know we have been in discussion with the administration about their proposal that we extend the existing Agreement for one year. This has been a difficult process both because of the slowness of the administration's responses and their refusal to provide us with the protections that we believe are absolutely essential to any such extension.
Last night we received a new proposal from the administration that contained several items that were regressive. Today we met through Zoom. While there was some small progress, the major stumbling block is the issue of layoff. We made clear that the price of the continued cooperation of our members and labor peace in September is protection against layoff. As we have stated repeatedly, cooperation is a two-way street and the administration cannot expect the commitment of the AAUP members while the threat of layoffs hangs over our heads.
We have agreed to meet again on Tuesday, June 2.
