A Message regarding the August 31 Convocation and AAUP Chapter Meeting
August 9, 2017
Dear Colleagues,
As we approach August 31st it is understandable the level of anxiety about what will happen if we do not have a tentative Agreement by that date. We are working with our legal counsel to outline all of the possible scenarios and will soon be sending that to you. In the meantime it is important that we have as much support from you as possible.
Some of you have voluntarily written members of the administration to voice your support for your negotiating team and your elected leadership and we very much appreciate that. Others have asked whether they should boycott the President's convocation on August 31st. We will still be under the present Agreement at that moment and that Agreement requires full-time faculty to attend convocation. We would not ask you to violate the Agreement but we may very well be asking for a show of solidarity at convocation similar to three years ago when we all attended wearing our AAUP t-shirts. What is not required is attendance at the President's reception that afternoon. As an additional show of solidarity we are therefore asking you not to RSVP that you are going to attend.
It is absolutely critical that everyone attends the AAUP chapter meeting on August 31 at 12:00 pm in the BLC Theater. We will update everyone on negotiations and future steps as needed.
In solidarity,
Your negotiating team,
Jeff Halpern, Chief Grievance Officer
