What To Say To Students About A Strike
August 16, 2017
We have received a number of requests about what should be told to students about the potential for a strike and what the students should do in the case of a strike. We suggest that you either email your students through your class roster or place on your syllabus in Canvas or both the following statement.
"The faculty is in negotiations with the administration for a new contract. It is possible that there will be a strike at some point after September 1st.
If a strike is called, I will not be in class, holding office hours, or responding to emails.
If the administration places a substitute into the class (either in person or online), I will not hold you responsible for anything that such a substitute does, any assignment that he/she gives you, or for attendance during the period of a strike.
If there is a strike, you should keep up with the assignments on my syllabus and once I return we will figure out how to make up for any missing material.
If you want to follow the progress of negotiations, you can do so by visiting the Rider AAUP website (http://www.rideraaup.net) or follow us on social media. You can find the links on our website."
In addition, you should put a copyright statement on your syllabus when you post it to Canvas. "Any use of this syllabus without the express permission of its author (your name) is a violation of copyright."
